“…The majority of the respondents indicated that metadata standards are important for interoperability and the optimization of external standards. Hicks, Perkins, and Maurer (2007) stated that standards can help but that local practices are still needed. They also mentioned that metadata "does not come with content standards" (p. 128).…”

“…The guidelines used Dublin Core as the metadata schema, with the CDP developing its own DCBuilder software so members would be able to create records. Additional examples from Hicks, Perkins, and Maurer (2007) and Toy-Smith (2010) detail the development of consortial metadata guidelines. As with the CDP, the guidelines described in their papers use Dublin Core, although in the case of Hicks, the OhioLINK Digital Media Center software system was custom-built to house the collections, while Toy-Smith describes the process using the CONTENTdm digital collection software, a commercial application.…”

“…Although their focus is on pulling together elements from different national standards, application profiles are similar to data dictionaries in that they define local use of metadata elements, but they are frequently designed to be used beyond the local community that created them. Application profiles may be developed for all resources for a digital repository system, as is the case with the OhioLINK Digital Media Center (Hicks, Perkins, & Maurer, 2007), or they may be developed for a particular type of content (Clair, 2008;Tambouris, Manouselis, & Costopoulou, 2007). However, drawing elements from different namespaces can present challenges, such as when one schema has a hierarchical structure while another allows for only limited relationships (Devey & Côté, 2006).…”

“…The OhioLINK Digital Media Center (DMC) was developed to create a digital object repository and to facilitate the standardized collection of metadata for the online catalog, allowing swift access to and delivery of shared electronic resources (Hicks, Perkins, & Maurer, 2007). OhioLINK Linking Service (OLinks) was also developed to provide access to full text sources, including those from licensed databases, and other digital materials (Cook & Dowling, 2003).…”
