Application Research of Intake-Air Cooling Technologies in Gas-Steam Combined Cycle Power Plants in China

Abstract: The generated power and efficiency of gas-steam combined cycle (GSCC) power plants depend on the temperature of the inlet air greatly. Based on the analysis of basic theory of inlet air cooling technologies, the application of evaporative cooling system and the absorption cooling system in GSCC power plants are discussed in this paper. Moreover, in China with high temperature and humidity, applied research and simulation analysis of the above two different cooling systems are conducted separately, the research… Show more

“…Improving combustion engine operation efficiency by using cyclic air cooling in chillers using exhaust heat potential [1,2] is one of the most widespread energy-saving technologies in internal combustion engines [3,4], gas engines [5,6] and gas turbines [7,8]. Therefore, combustion engine cyclic air cooling as a whole, and turbine intake air cooling Energies 2023, 16, 6105 2 of 16 (TIAC) in particular, are kept as sustainable and prosperous trends for enhancing operation efficiency [9,10].…”

“…13 A commonly used analysis involves calculations of the annual P CDH, while assigning an economic benefit to each CDH number in terms of fuel saved or engine output increased due to cooling. 14,15 This calculation gives the total annual fuel saving or additional power output that can be produced due to engine inlet air cooling 16,17 and takes into account the climatic performance characteristics of the engine applied.…”

“…Gas turbine combined cycle (GTCC) is an efficient way to generate electricity with a thermal efficiency of up to 55% or more and is considered as one of the best options to generate electricity from fossil energy sources in the coming decades. The unit operating efficiency and power output of gas turbines are largely influenced by the inlet air temperature [1], and for every 10°C increase in the inlet gas temperature, the specific fuel consumption will increase by 1.5% to 4% [2]. Therefore, the use of exhaust gas waste heat driven inlet cooling system is a promising and practical research direction.…”
