“…From a mechanistic perspective, an increasing number of methods in molecular neurotoxicology are now available for uncovering drivers of pollutant‐induced behavioural changes (reviewed in Bownik & Wlodkowic, 2021). These methods range from transcriptomics (i.e.…”

“…analysis of proteins) and enzymatic assays, metabolomics (i.e. analysis of chemical processes involving metabolites in cells and tissues), and examination of sub‐cellular processes such as programmed cell death (Bownik & Wlodkowic, 2021). An important recent advance that promises to increase mechanistic understanding in behavioural ecotoxicology is large‐scale neurotransmitter profiling, enabled by the above‐mentioned rapid developments in analytical chemistry (see Section II.1).…”

“…Behavioral response with sublethal pollutant concentrations were reported to be fast and sensitive biomarkers for water quality, ecotoxicological and chemical risk assessments ( Hellou, 2011 ; Melvin and Wilson, 2013 ; Pyle and Ford, 2017 ; Legradi et al, 2018 ; Xia et al, 2018 ). Some behavioral outcomes have been measured in contaminant-exposed fish, including swimming speeds, startle responses, prey capture abilities, learning, and memory, which related to the probability of escaping a predator or capturing prey for feeding ( Legradi et al, 2018 ; Bownik and Wlodkowic, 2021 ; Fitzgerald et al, 2021 ). Considering the increasing numbers of environmental contaminants and their unknown neurotoxic potentials, identifying and improving neurotoxicity testing strategies and methods are important for eco-neurotoxicity assessments in the future ( Pyle and Ford, 2017 ; Legradi et al, 2018 ; Xia et al, 2018 ; Fitzgerald et al, 2021 ).…”

“…Behavioral assessment, regarded as a functional endpoint, is an integrative signal representing nervous system status or fitness [ 12 , 13 , 14 ]. Not only are larval zebrafish able to exhibit many different behaviors [ 15 , 16 ] but, analogous to mammalian neurodevelopment, the development of the zebrafish nervous system is guided and influenced by the interplay among brain development and endocrine systems such as the hypothalamus-pituitary-thyroid (HPT) axis [ 17 , 18 , 19 ] and the hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal (inter-renal in zebrafish) (HPA/HPI) axis (reviewed in [ 20 ]).…”
