Applications of Colon Capsule Endoscopy

Shabana F. Pasha

Abstract: Based on the current literature, CCE II demonstrates comparable polyp detection rates as optical colonoscopy and CT colonography, and improved cost-effectiveness. The main limitation to patient acceptance is the requirement of a rigorous bowel preparation. Preliminary studies show good correlation between CCE and optical colonoscopy for assessment of colonic disease activity in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). CCE II is currently FDA, approved as an adjunctive test in patients with prior incomplete colonoscop… Show more

“…However, this previous study did not focus on the performance of CCE as a screening tool in a screening population. Participation rate is one of the key performance indicators in a population-based screening program [1,3]. The overall participation in 21 European countries was 49.5 % in countries using FIT-based screening, while the desirable uptake according to the European guidelines is > 65 % [1].…”

“…Most European countries use a fecal immunochemical test (FIT) followed by colonoscopy in individuals with a positive FIT result [2]. However, the performance of this screening strategy seems to be hampered by low participation rates for colonoscopy [3]. This could be due to the fact that colonoscopy is perceived as an invasive and painful procedure and the fact that it requires some form of sedation [4].…”

“…In 2014, capsule colonoscopy was approved by the United States FDA to detect colon polyp only for patients with incomplete colonoscopy [14]. Methylated SEPT9 DNA is shed into the blood from colon cancer and it can be detected by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in the blood.…”

“…Diagnosis and management of small bowel polyp is complex which requires capsule endoscopy and MR enterography. 6,7 Occasionally intraoperative endoscopy and enterotomy is needed for removal of large distal small-bowel polyps. 8 Patient with PJS are at increased chance of developing malignancy 9 hence the require routine screening and surveillance and various protocols have been suggested to monitor stomach, small and large bowel, breasts, testicles, ovaries, uterus, and pancreas by various procedures as frequently as once a year.…”
