Applications of Full Spatial Resolution Space-Based Advanced Infrared Soundings in the Preconvection Environment

Abstract: Advanced infrared (IR) sounders such as the Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) and Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer (IASI) provide atmospheric temperature and moisture profiles with high vertical resolution and high accuracy in preconvection environments. The derived atmospheric stability indices such as convective available potential energy (CAPE) and lifted index (LI) from advanced IR soundings can provide critical information 1 ; 6 h before the development of severe convective storms. Three con… Show more

“…The MODIS has 36 spectral channels with wavelengths including the visible, near-infrared, and infrared regions. The MODIS data have been used and their benefits have been demonstrated for environmental applications such as monitoring and predicting weather and climate (e.g., [18][19][20][21]). Abundant MODIS-derived products are available for atmospheric, oceanic, and land applications, among which AOD is the most relevant to air quality studies.…”

“…The global training dataset consists of more than 15,000 atmospheric profiles and corresponding to simulate AIRS radiances from the Stand-alone Radiative Transfer Algorithm (SARTA) [23] forward model calculations. The collocated Aqua Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MODIS) level 2 cloud mask product (MYD35) was used to determine clear or cloudy AIRS footprint on a SFOV basis [24][25][26]. The selected subset radiances at 1450 AIRS channels were selected in a one-dimensional variational (1DVAR) physical iteration by the conjunction use of SARTA forward calculation.…”

“…The region in question is located within an active cyclogenesis region to the east of the Qinghai-Xizhang Plateau; there are two such places of frequent cyclogenesis, and Zhouqu is within the northern one [e.g., Ding, 1991, p. 203]. In this sense, extreme precipitation at Zhouqu is produced by locally, orographically enhanced convective storms [Li et al, 2012]. In a larger context, the vapor still eventually comes from the Indian Ocean, following a path illustrated in Figure 8.…”
