Lead isotopes are a powerful and versatile tool to elucidate fundamental geological problems related to the formation and evolution of continental crust. K‐feldspar is a popular target for Pb isotope measurement as it is prevalent in many rock types and tends to capture the initial Pb isotope composition of its parental magma. We present data for a new Pb isotope reference material: Albany K‐feldspar; as well as updated data for Shap K‐feldspar. Results of Pb double‐spike TIMS for Albany K‐feldspar are 206Pb/204Pb = 16.7872 ± 0.0062, 207Pb/204Pb = 15.5640 ± 0.0056, and 208Pb/204Pb = 36.6600 ± 0.0168 (2s). TIMS measurement results for Shap K‐feldspar indicate two isotopically distinct Pb populations. LA‐MC‐ICP‐MS, with a spatial resolution as high as 15 μm, indicates a homogeneous Pb isotopic composition in Albany K‐feldspar. In accord with previous studies, our results show that scatter in the measured Pb isotope ratios, related to the low natural isotopic abundance of 204Pb, along with the effect of isobaric 204Hg‐204Pb interference, increases at lower count rates. However, the mean Pb isotope ratios measured via LA‐MC‐ICP‐MS using a range of spot sizes are in excellent agreement with TIMS results thus highlighting the feasibility of Pb isotope determination via LA‐MC‐ICP‐MS to access geological information preserved in small crystals, including mineral inclusions.

Lead isotope analyses of K-feldspar from late Sveconorwegian (900–1000 Ma) granitic pegmatites and A-type, ferroan granitic intrusions in four different areas of southern Norway analyzed by laser-ablation inductively coupled plasma source mass spectrometry (LA-ICPMS) give compositions in the range 206Pb/204Pb = 16.637 to 17.555, 207Pb/204Pb = 15.445 to 15.534, 208Pb/204Pb = 36.317 to 37.459. These compositions broadly overlap with the initial compositions estimated from previously published solution TIMS whole-rock and feldspar Pb isotope analyses of late Sveconorwegian granitic plutons across the region, suggesting that magmas forming A-type granite plutons and granitic pegmatites have been derived from broadly similar source rocks, i.e., from a continental crust that initially formed in Palaeoproterozoic time (ca. 2.10–1.86 Ga), and subsequently underwent intracrustal partial melting, differentiation and rejuvenation via mafic underplating in Mesoproterozoic time.

Comparison of detrital zircon U–Pb geochronology and detrital K‐feldspar Pb–Pb isotopic data from Upper Cretaceous sandstones of southern Utah reveals important provenance information that is unrecorded by more chemically and physically durable detrital minerals like zircons. To better understand these signals, we also present an updated database of Pb‐isotopic ratios in ores, whole rocks and feldspars, for potential sediment source terranes in North America. Detrital K‐feldspar Pb‐isotopes indicate sediment provenance of the Western Cordillera/Mojave, Yavapai‐Mazatzal and Wyoming terranes, with limited input from recycled Sevier fold‐thrust belt strata. The K‐feldspar data broadly support previous interpretations, largely based on detrital zircon datasets, of a Cretaceous palaeo‐river system transporting sediment from the southwest. However, the light‐fraction data also provide important, complementary and otherwise unrecognized perspectives as compared to detrital zircon datasets. For example, K‐feldspars indicate a stronger apparent influence of Western Cordillera/Mojave and Wyoming terrane sources than previously interpreted. We interpret the K‐feldspar Wyoming terrane signal as the result of south‐directed longshore drift, with preferential loss of zircons due to hydraulic sorting processes. As relatively new detrital K‐feldspar detrital methods continue to be developed, this multi‐proxy approach to provenance could be informative in other sedimentary basins where suitable source terranes can be identified.
