Applications of Polydopamine in Implant Surface Modification

Ting Ma,
Chen‐Xi Wang,
Xi‐Yuan Ge
et al.

Abstract: There is great clinical demand for orthopedic and dental implant surface modification methods to prevent osseointegration failure and improve implant biological functions. Notably, dopamine (DA) can be polymerized to form polydopamine (PDA), which is similar to the adhesive proteins secreted by mussels, to form a stable bond between the bone surface and implants. Therefore, PDA has the potential to be used as an implant surface modification material with good hydrophilicity, roughness, morphology, mechanical s… Show more

“…In addition to CHX's antibacterial effectivity through gradual release, plydopamine has been suggested to exhibit contact bactericidal capacity via chelation with ions or proteins as well as electrostatic effects resulting from disruption of bacterial cell membranes (Ma et al, 2023). This dual mechanism may contribute to enhanced antibacterial action when combined with CHX.…”

“…Besides, highly crystalline HA produced at high temperatures is difficult to degrade, exhibits limited biological activity, and has relatively single structures . Currently, researchers have been focused on a bioinspired method to synthesize the HA coating to avoid these limitations (Ma et al, 2023).…”

“…The common bioinspired method used in HA-coated implants was the polydopamine (PDA)-assisted method ( Ma et al, 2023 ). It is a simple, mild but effective way to prepare HA-coated by the immersion of PDA-modified Ti into simulated body fluid (SBF).…”
