Applications of self‐organizing map for patterning macrofungal diversity of xerothermic swards

Abstract: Macrofungal communities were investigated in four associations of xerothermic swards: Festucetum pallentis, Origano-Brachypodietum, Adonido-Brachypodietum pinnati and Diantho-Armerietum elongatae in a Jurassic area of the Częstochowa Upland (southern Poland). A total of 47 species were recorded. The selforganising map (SOM)-an unsupervised algorithm for artificial neural networks-was used to recognise patterns in the macrofungal communities of diverse xerothermic swards. Only two associations were mycologicall… Show more

“…Two species of the genus Disciseda: Disciseda bovista and D. candida, associated with Pontic-steppe vegetation, are appropriate species of the associations Festucetum pallentis and Sisymbrio-Stipetum capillatae [6,19,[31][32][33][34]. Localities noted in our study confirm their affiliation with grasslands of the alliances Festuco-Stipion and SeslerioFestucion duriusculae.…”

“…Such a profound difference between X 2 (in which samples from the 1990s are dominant) and Y 1 , Y 2 (containing almost all the samples from the 2000s) testifies to a much better quality of the aquatic environment at sites from which samples assigned to the two latter subclusters come from. The results also testify the potential bioindicative role of the number of species exhibiting the significantly highest IndVals for a given group of samples (Adamczyk, ; Szczepko et al ., ).…”

“…The SOM method has previously been used in vegetation studies (e.g. Luyssaert et al 2004;Zhang & Yang 2008;Adamczyk 2011;Suriguga et al 2011;Adamczyk et al 2012), but it was applied to contemporary investigations. It has never before been used to analyse historical data obtained by the classical Braun-Blanquet method.…”
