Background COVID–19 pandemic caused university closures, which created learning challenges for students worldwide. Switching to online educational systems had significant impact on students’ performances. The current study aims to investigate the perception of university students from the Nutrition Science department regarding e-learning in Iran. Methods The design of the study is cross-sectional. Data were collected through online surveys from Iranian students from the Nutrition Sciences Department. Stratified random sampling was used to randomly select 955 participants. A self-administered validated questionnaire was used for data collection. Descriptive statistics, Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and Chi-Square tests were used for analysis of the data. Results Results revealed that 67.2% of students didn’t have any former experience of e-learning. About 38.3% had moderate levels of Information Technology (IT) skills. Our results revealed that based on students’ responses, being able to stay at home was one of the most common benefits of e-learning (39.1%). However, the most common challenge that students faced was related to technical problems (39.6%). When compared to e-learning, most students preferred face-to face type of learning. Students believed that this method no only increased their knowledge but also their skills and social competence as compared to e-learning. Only 28% of students rated e-learning as enjoyable. Furthermore, acceptance of online based education was statistically associated with students’ degree level. Conclusion In conclusion, students reported both advantages and disadvantages of e-learning but still reported that face-to-face learning is considered the most effective form of learning.

The contemporary system of higher education necessitates the application of digital resources and technologies. The aim of the research is to manifest the impact of digitalization on the educational process and to outline their incorporation into teaching practices. The descriptive study was applied that is based on the participants’ behaviors, or perceptions of digital resources and technologies used. The following methods were implemented: surveys; observations; content analysis; semi-structured interviews; and questionnaires. Over 60 recent scientific works were selected to evaluate the problem of using digital resources and technologies for improvement of educational process. The research was conducted among 43 instructors of educational institutions. The findings showed that instructors use digital resources and technologies extensively. On the basis of average calculated index, it was concluded that Google Docs, communication tools, smartphone apps, Learning Management systems, games, presentation software, online assessment, AI tools are most effective. Digital resources and technologies are characterized by a number of advantages oriented towards improvement of the educational process. It was found that digital tools are incorporated through a number of techniques and strategies: demonstration, collaborative learning, problem-based learning, project-based learning, and digital games. Instructors stated that they use interactive lecture, peer learning, and simulation-based learning less frequently. The choice of techniques and strategies depends on the course or lesson, educational objectives, students’ needs, and possible challenges which instructors may face. The study outcomes can be used to elaborate funding decisions, curriculum development or teachers’ professional development for formation of digital skills among academic and pedagogical staff.

Education in the 21st century has become more technology integrated, and the shift from conventional modalities of teaching to technology-assisted teaching methodologies accelerated during the pandemic years. The current study employed a qualitative research design (n=12) to explore this shift and the expectations of these novel teaching modalities from both facilitator and learner perspectives in urban higher education settings in India. An inductive thematic analysis of the qualitative data revealed that there is a significant gap in lecturers’ and students’ definitions and expectations of smart learning environments. The themes that emerged from the data were bifurcated into lecturer and student perspectives on smart learning environments and included innovative nature, novelty and complexity, student excitement, and limitations of content. Based on the findings, lecturer and student expectations of SLE platforms had points of convergence and divergence which are unique to the socio-cultural positions of the participants. The current study argues the need to devise methods to improve the efficacy of SLEs in developing economies.
