Applying the Happenstance Learning Theory to Involuntary Career Transitions

Abstract: The happenstance learning theory (HLT) proposes a model of career counseling that helps clients to build more satisfying personal and work lives. Although reflective listening remains an essential part of the process, HLT is an action‐oriented approach to helping clients to both create and benefit from unplanned events. Success is measured not by what happens during the counseling interview but by what the client experiences in the real world during and after counseling. A case study illustrates how HLT might … Show more

“…As philosopher Nussbaum has pointed out, emotions inform our learning -they are an 'essential contributor to the way we think and learn about life's deepest mysteries, especially our personal vulnerability, our dependence on others, and about the way we can support the flourishing of ourselves and other people' (Plumb, 2014, p. 146). Finally, emotional resilience is also needed in the face of setbacks and unpredictable changes in our working lives (Krumboltz, Foley, & Cotter, 2013) -indeed the complexity, insecurity and individualisation already mentioned at the beginning of this section cause existential uncertainty that cannot be resolved by engaging with rationality alone.…”

“…Later, the revised Happenstance Learning Theory (Krumboltz, 2009, 2011; Krumboltz et al, 2013) proposed a counseling process with the following yin - yang -mixed type of strategies: (1) orienting the client to viewing unplanned events as necessary and normal to initiate a ready mode; (2) setting the goal of creating more satisfying lives to induce career action, (3) expressing empathic understanding of the client's situation and concerns to unfold a counseling process, (4) identifying the client's past success to strengthen self-efficacy and support current action, (5) assisting the client to capitalize on unplanned events for learning and exploration, (6) brainstorming the next action step with the client to produce desirable chance events; (7) helping the client to overcome blocks to action, (8) following up the client's action and reinforcing their success in the real world, and (9) in case of need, helping the client to overcome fear of making mistakes and to take action.…”
