Applying the Theoretical Domains Framework to identify barriers and targeted interventions to enhance nurses’ use of electronic medication management systems in two Australian hospitals

Abstract: BackgroundMedication errors harm hospitalised patients and increase health care costs. Electronic Medication Management Systems (EMMS) have been shown to reduce medication errors. However, nurses do not always use EMMS as intended, largely because implementation of such patient safety strategies requires clinicians to change their existing practices, routines and behaviour. This study uses the Theoretical Domains Framework (TDF) to identify barriers and targeted interventions to enhance nurses’ appropriate use… Show more

“…cognitive rehabilitation) and potentially across other allied health disciplines. Using a theoretic framework to guide barrier and motivator identification is supported by implementation research (Debono et al, 2017;Moore et al, 2018;Moullin, Sabater-Hern andez, Fernandez-Llimos, & Benrimoj, 2015). Barrier identification is a critical first step, however, future research should include intervention mapping with its usefulness tested.…”

“…The TDF is used to analyze barriers for implementation and to tailor interventions aimed at influencing practitioners' behaviors (Francis et al, 2012). Recent publications include interventions that target nurses' use of electronic records (Debono et al, 2017), diabetes prevention behaviors in Thailand (Suntornsut et al, 2016) and chest pain risk evaluation (Skoien et al, 2016).…”

“…Qualitative data were analysed in NVivo (version 12) using the deductive TDF approach, as detailed in Figure 1. 32,33 TDF domains most likely to influence the service proposed were selected using the criteria adapted from Islam et al 34 The major themes and sub-themes within these domains were selected for final analysis of key facilitators and barriers. Deviant case analysis was performed to ensure that perspectives that diverged from dominant trends were not overlooked.…”
