Approach to integrate product conceptual design information into a computer-aided design system

Abstract: Commercial computer-aided design systems support the geometric definition of product, but they lack utilities to support initial design stages. Typical tasks such as customer need capture, functional requirement formalization, or design parameter definition are conducted in applications that, for instance, support "quality function deployment" and "failure modes and effects analysis" techniques. Such applications are noninteroperable with the computer-aided design systems, leading to discontinuous design infor… Show more

“…Chen et al (2012) proposed a knowledge-based framework for the conceptual design phase of multidisciplinary systems and the Intelligent Creative Conceptual Design Platform (ICCDP) has been developed. Torres et al (2013) proposed a method to integrate conceptual design information into a CAD system using KBE approach by developing a prototype application. La Rocca and Van Tooren (2010) developed a KBE application called Multi Model Generator (MMG) to support aircraft multidisciplinary design and optimisation.…”

“…It can reduce time and efforts by connecting knowledge from multidisciplinary experts. Similarly, Ma et al (2013) and Torres et al (2013) also used the KB system method to integrate multidisciplinary knowledge into the product conceptual design. Moreover, they use the KB systems to accommodate customers' needs in design activities and support decisions in computer-aided design systems.…”

“…KB systems have been used widely for engineering purpose (Ma et al, 2013; Patel et al, 1997; Prasad, 2014; Prasad, 2016; Torres et al, 2013) and manufacturing management purpose (Aldairi et al, 2016; Milana et al, 2014b; Nawawi et al, 2013; Wibisono and Khan, 2016). They have successfully provided consistent solutions on specific problems, reducing time in decision-making, supporting knowledge integration and knowledge sharing and avoiding loss of knowledge from experts and employees (Wibisono and Khan, 2016).…”
