Approach to stochastic modelling of consumer exposure for any substance from canned foods using simulant migration data

Abstract: A two-dimensional probabilistic model was constructed to estimate the short-term dietary exposure of UK consumers to any generalized migrant from coated light metal food packaging. Using three UK National Dietary and Nutrition Surveys (NDNS) comprising 4-7-day dietary surveys for different age and gender groups, actual body weights and survey years, a sample representative of the dietary consumption of the UK population was obtained comprising around 4,200 food items. Interrogation of the raw data showed that … Show more

“…The food consumption data were supplied by the database managers for the countries involved in FACET. For the refined deterministic approach at verifying the FACET results, the UK National Diet and Nutrition Survey (NDNS) survey for 19–64 year olds (Henderson et al 2002) was used as the data were readily available from previous work (Holmes et al 2005; Castle et al 2006; Oldring et al 2006; Northing et al 2009). Data on the type of packaging for different foodstuffs were obtained from Euromonitor data for 2005 as well as information on the surface area to packed food weight of the packaging.…”

“…With regard to contact conditions, Tenax functionality as a food simulant is reported to be preserved for at least 2 months when used at conditions below 40 • C (Castle et al, 2006;European Committee for Standardization, 2003). It is proposed that the standardized testing conditions recommended by the EU for plastics are tested on paper and cardboard FCMs with the scope of evaluating their applicability and impact on such (Groh & Muncke, 2017).…”

“…( 2 ) Probabilistic models were applied to estimate the short‐term exposure of U.K. consumers to residual bisphenol‐A‐diglycidyl‐ether (BADGE) from can coatings of canned foods, ( 3,4 ) to di‐2‐ethylhexyl‐adipate (DEHA) styrene ( 3 ) from several packaging systems, and to a generalized migrant from coated metal cans.
