Approaches to prepare tfc polyamide membranes by coating diamine during, and/or post formation of asymmetric membranes and their performances

Abstract: -Thin film composite membranes were prepared by using1,3-phenylene diamine in the gelation bath as well as in coating conditions. The cross-sectional view of the membranes shows different patterns for membranes prepared in a water-bath (Mem-I) and a diamine-containing water bath (Mem-II). The thin film composite membranes prepared using a diamine bath and coating (Mem-III) had improved salt rejecting ability but low volume flux. The performances of the salt rejection follows the order Na 2 SO 4 > NaCl > MgSO 4… Show more

“…The extent to which these forces are present depends on both the particles in the solution and the membrane material. To overcome the flux decline and to make the membrane process more competitive, many recent studies have been done to minimize fouling and/or membrane development (Chuang et al, 2008;Joshi et al, 2011;Pollo et al, 2012;Dong et al, 2012;Mirzaie et al, 2012;Pakizeh et al, 2013). Many approaches, including pretreatment of feed suspension, the use of filter aids, physical inserts, Taylor vortices, and pulsating flow, have been studied to improve the performance of the process.…”

“…Dimethyl formamide solvent for polysulfone is preferred because of its slow dissolution nature, so that it does not lead to fast and poorly controlled non-homogeneous deformation [29]. It is known for thin dense layer over the top and nodular structure at bottom of the thin dense layer [30]. The thin dense layer controls selectivity and other nodular part controls the permeation.…”
