Approximate Analytical Model for Hertzian Elliptical Contact Problems

Abstract: In rolling bearing analysis Hertzian contact theory is used to compute local contact stiffness. This theory does not have a closed form analytical solution and requires numerical calculations to obtain results. Using approximations of elliptical functions and with a mathematical study of Hertzian results, an empirical explicit formulation is proposed in this paper and allows us to obtain the dimensions, the displacement, and the contact stress with at least 0.003% precision and it can be applied to a large ran… Show more

“…Take x F as an example, When the sensor receives the force in the x direction, the two elastic beams in the x direction will slide along the x direction, the beams in the y direction will be deformed, and the tensile stress generated by friction will be far less than the bending stress generated by the deformation, so this structure will be better in decoupling performance. [4] The flexible hinge structure can make the deformation position of the deformation beam concentrate to the center station, so as to determine the position of the patch of the sensor. In order to meet the lightweight requirements, the sensor material is made of hard aluminum alloy 2A12…”

“…Finally it is worth noting that the Hertz theory allows also the calculation of the semi-axes a and b of the elliptical contact patch, depending on the material properties, the curvatures of the contact surfaces and the normal contact force N c (or, equivalently, the normal penetration p n ) [6,10,11,29].…”

“…The detection of the contact points P c is based on some innovative procedures recently developed by the authors in previous works [10,22,34]. The normal contact problem is then solved through the global Hertz theory [6,11,29] to evaluate the normal contact forces N c . Finally The strategy to solve the tangential contact problem includes the innovative degraded adhesion model developed by the authors in this work (see Fig.…”
