Apricots

Abstract: Several dozen publicly-sponsored breeding programs around the world are developing new fresh market and processing apricot cultivars. Apricots have a more limited environmental range than other tree fruits, and therefore, many breeders are interested in broadening adaptations for specific growing regions. Plum Pox Virus resistance is a widely pursued objective and there are ongoing efforts to identify molecular markers that are closely linked to disease resistance. Fruit sugars, acids, pigments and volatile ar… Show more

“…However, apricot trees could survive these intervals from seeds or as escaped individuals. It has been shown that selection may lead to significant genetic gain in apricot (Ledbetter, 2008). The imported Turkish material was likely subjected to natural and human selection pressures that resulted in some landrace cultivars being well adapted to Hungarian ecological conditions and having valuable pomological characteristics.…”

“…Koehne and Prunus mume (Siebold) Siebold & Zucc. (Ledbetter, ). In addition to apricot domestication for fruit consumption, wild species from the Armeniaca section have been also cultivated for ornamental purposes, such as P. mume that is currently cultivated all over East Asia (Zhang et al, ).…”

“…In apricot, each cultivar is usually restricted to a particular geographical area with certain ecological conditions, and low yields are obtained whenever particular cultivars are grown in other areas (Layne et al, 1996;Ledbetter, 2008). This narrow adaptability limits the expansion of most apricot cultivars to other regions and countries.…”
