Aptian ammonites of Abu Dhabi (United Arab Emirates)

Abstract: Abstract:The identification of some twenty ammonite fragments from oil wells drilled in offshore Abu Dhabi revealed the presence of six Aptian genera: Cheloniceras, Epicheloniceras, Gargasiceras, Colombiceras, Pseudohaploceras, and Macroscaphites. These ammonites indicate the Furcata Zone and the succeeding Martini Zone. The Gargasian age of the upper part (HST) of the Shu'aiba as well as that of the whole of the Bab are thus firmly established.

“…One “large mold,” which was not illustrated in the publication [ Yamamoto et al ., ], was identified by A. Misaki as “ Pseudosaynella raresulcata ,” characteristic of the “Weissi” (Forbesi)—Deshayesi zones (Bedoulian). However, this find was not unique: as other authors reported ammonitic finds at the same level, either past [ Banner and Wood , ; Hassan et al ., ; Azer and Toland , ; C. W. Wright, unpublished data, 1959, M. Howarth, unpublished data, 1992, both quoted by Granier []] or more recent records [ Granier , , Figure 12; Granier et al ., , 2011; Busnardo and Granier , , Plate 1, figures 1–11; Granier and Busnardo , ], which point to younger ages (Gargasian, Aptian auct . ).…”
