Aquamimicry system: a sutiable strategy for shrimp aquaculture – a review

Abstract: Shrimp culture is the most lucrative sector in aquaculture industry; however, for its sustainable development the environment conservation should be concerned. New developed technologies are required to achieve aquaculture to its sustainable goals. Among the different novel sustainable technologies, the biofloc technology (BFT) and more recently the aquamimicry system are considered as reliable methods in burgeoning development of shrimp culture. The establishment of the BFT needs a certain carbon to nitrogen … Show more

“…These proprieties have been shown to minimize environmental impacts [ 32 ] with no or minimal effluent to the natural surroundings [ 33 ]. To produce microbial aggregates, balancing carbon and nitrogen is necessary, with traditional aquafeeds being the main source of nitrogen and carbon, and affordable products such as sugar cane molasses and grains, as well as inorganic fertilizers, providing the remainder of carbon fraction and other key nutrients [ 34 , 35 ]. Proteinaceous microbial-based food source containing vitamins, lipids, and carbohydrates is produced in situ [ 36 ] and can reduce aquafeed consumption by up to 20% [ 33 , 37 , 38 ].…”

“…An effective solution for addressing waste material toxicity is the gradual addition of carbonaceous materials in smaller quantities, as opposed to adding them all at once to the pond (Crab et al, 2010). Introducing carbohydrates to systems used for intensive shrimp culture, without water exchange, has been found to significantly enhance water quality, bacterial activities, and zooplankton growth, resulting in improved growth performance (Khanjani et al, 2022 c;Guo et al, 2012). When a carbon source is introduced into the culture environment, it is rapidly metabolized by the biofloc community present in the environment.…”
