“…Therefore, high temperature of the ground surface in the daytime would be risky for turtles, in particular for long distance movement. It has been considered that freshwater turtles basically use aquatic environments except during basking (Gibbons 1970, Burke and Gibbons 1995, Cadi and Joly 2003, Donaldson and Echternacht 2005. However, our study revealed frequent use of terrestrial environments, especially in M. japonica.…”

“…Reports of single cases and outbreaks in reptiles so far have mainly involved box turtles within North America (De Voe et al 2004 ;Allender et al 2006 ;Johnson et al 2008Johnson et al , 2010Ruder et al 2010 ;Allender 2012 ;Kimble et al 2014 ). While eastern box turtles are primarily terrestrial, they have been shown to spend a considerable amount of time in temporary ponds (Donaldson and Echternacht 2005 ), which may expose them to ranavirus through water or sympatric amphibians (Belzer and Seibert 2011 ;Currylow et al 2014 ). Some studies have indicated that increased ranaviral mortality in box turtles may correlate with increased exposure to infected sympatric amphibians, possibly via predation on infected amphibians, exposure to water containing ranavirus shed by amphibians, or via hematophagous insects (Belzer and Seibert 2011 ;Kimble et al 2014 ).…”

“…Thus, habitat temperature is an important resource for turtles in their thermoregulation. Terrestrial turtles and tortoises inhabiting in shady habitats thermoregulate by exploring the thermal gradient in the habitat, such as exposure to solar radiation in forest gap or forest edge (Donaldson and Echternacht, 2005;Luiselli, 2005). Most available information relevant to the thermal preference of C. flavomarginata is anecdotal or based on observation of captive individuals (Zhang, 1986;Huang, Zhao and Wang, 2007).…”
