Aquatic invasive species: challenges for the future

Abstract: Humans have effectively transported thousands of species around the globe and, with accelerated trade; the rate of introductions has increased over time. Aquatic ecosystems seem at particular risk from invasive species because of threats to biodiversity and human needs for water resources. Here, we review some known aspects of aquatic invasive species (AIS) and explore several new questions. We describe impacts of AIS, factors limiting their dispersal, and the role that humans play in transporting AIS. We also… Show more

“…These plants are also important since they are a source of oxygen, provide food, shade and cover for fish and other aquatic organisms. However, freshwater ecosystems seem to be at particular risk from invasive plant species because of threats to biodiversity [11] and human needs for water resources [12]. In India too, many aquatic bodies including rivers, lakes, ponds and canals are now fully covered by excessive growth of invasive plants [13], which if left unchecked become extremely difficult to control.…”

“…Air memfasilitasi atau memudahkan keong mas bermigrasi. Menurut Havel et al, 2015), keberadaan waduk dapat menjadi sarana yang menyediakan air untuk memudahkan suatu spesies air invasif (AIS=Aquatic Invasive Spesies) menginvasi suatu daerah baru.…”

“…In assessments of the socioeconomic and environmental impact of these plants (Bonanno, 2016;Havel, Kovalenko, Thomaz, Amalfitano, & Kats, 2015), it is necessary to consider not just the negative impacts, but also the positive impacts of invasive macrophytes for developing conservation, management and policy strategies (Chapman, 2016;Sax et al, 2007).…”
