Archaeogenomic evidence reveals prehistoric matrilineal dynasty

Abstract: For societies with writing systems, hereditary leadership is documented as one of the hallmarks of early political complexity and governance. In contrast, it is unknown whether hereditary succession played a role in the early formation of prehistoric complex societies that lacked writing. Here we use an archaeogenomic approach to identify an elite matriline that persisted between 800 and 1130 CE in Chaco Canyon, the centre of an expansive prehistoric complex society in the Southwestern United States. We show t… Show more

“…Collagen was then directly AMS 14 C dated (Beta, AA) or further purified using ultrafiltration (PSU, UCIAMS, OxA, Poz, MAMS). 66 It is standard in some laboratories (PSU/UCIAMS, OxA) to use stable carbon and nitrogen isotopes as an additional quality control measure. For these samples, the %C, %N and C:N ratios were evaluated before AMS 14 C dating.…”

“…Collagen was then directly AMS 14 C dated (ISGS, Pta) or further purified using ultrafiltration (PSUAMS, UCIAMS, OxA, Wk, Beta) (Brown et al, 1988; Kennett et al, 2017) or a modified XAD method (Lohse et al, 2014; Stafford et al, 1991). It is standard in some laboratories (PSUAMS, UCIAMS, Wk, OxA) to use stable carbon and nitrogen isotopes as an additional quality control measure.…”

“…We also used stable carbon and nitrogen isotope measurements to determine the marine reservoir correction for each individual as described below. The detailed bone preparation and quality control methods we used for the newly reported dates from PSUAMS and UCIAMS are reported elsewhere [33, 35]. …”
