Archimede Solar Energy Molten Salt Parabolic Trough Demo Plant: A Step Ahead towards the New Frontiers of CSP

Abstract: Since July 2013 the first stand-alone Molten Salt Parabolic Trough (MSPT) plant, located adjacent to the Archimede Solar Energy (ASE) manufacturing plant in Massa Martana (Italy), is in operation. After one year of operation, the management of the ASE demonstration plant has shown that MSPT technology is a suitable and reliable option. Several O&M procedures and tests have been performed, always with very good results confirming that this approach can be easily scaled up to realize standard size CSP plants with… Show more

“…In concentrating solar power generation systems (CSP) with parabolic trough mirrors, the operating temperature range was formerly approximately 300 to 400˝C [1][2][3]. However, in a more recent plant established in Italy, those which utilize molten salt as heat transfer fluids operate at 550˝C [3,4]. In CSPs, steam turbines are applied to convert thermal energy into electricity.…”

“…A new technology has been experimentally validated (Muñ oz-Anton et al, 2014), using parabolic trough solar collectors cooled by gas at high temperature (up to 525°C) and pressure (up to 100 bar). Another innovative technology has been developed (Maccari et al, 2015), integrating a parabolic trough CSP with a molten salts storage able to reach temperatures around 550°C. Moreover, the EU funded project ''HITECO" consortium is working on the development of parabolic trough able to work up to 600°C (Barriga et al, 2014;Cachafeiro et al, 2015).…”

“…In some CSP plants, the same molten salt is used as the heat transfer fluid in the solar field. 7,10 Currently, the investment costs for CSP are high due to the cost of construction materials for storage tanks, heat exchanger, pipes and receiver. The initial investment costs are a large contribution to the final price of produced electricity.…”
