Pathok Negoro Mosques is an architectural masterpiece. These mosques are part of history in forming Yogyakarta. The existence of the Sultan’s Ngayogyakarta Palace is inseparable from the Pathok Negoro Mosques building. These mosques also have a function as a defensive system of the Islamic kingdom in Yogyakarta. Arguably, the current generation is getting deprived of the intellectual heritage of culture and history. The history and culture of the Pathok Negoro Mosques will be the content of this research. This research aims to develop an interactive application for learning the history and culture of architecture based on augmented reality. Augmented reality applications developed using unity. This research is proposed to be carried out in 2 stages. The first stage is related to the collection of the historical and cultural context of the mosque. The second stage is the development of an AR application for Android mobile devices. The reference data was made into the AR application with several methods, such as plane detection and image tracking. The research managed to develop a mobile augmented reality application in Unity3D 2018.3.14f1 for android devices that consists of the narrative recorded voice of brief history and culture the Pathok Negoro Mosques. The app also shows a well-ordered animation of building structure such as roof, roof insulation, roof structure and column of Pathok Negoro Mosques. Moreover, the research showed a clear step and issue of making an augmented reality app as learning of history and culture of Pathok Negoro Mosques

Augmented reality (AR) allows the real and digital worlds to converge and overlap in a new way of observation and understanding. The architectural field can significantly benefit from AR applications, due to their systemic complexity in terms of knowledge and process management. Global interest and many research challenges are focused on this field, thanks to the conjunction of technological and algorithmic developments from one side, and the massive digitization of built data. A significant quantity of research in the AEC and educational fields describes this state of the art. Moreover, it is a very fragmented domain, in which specific advances or case studies are often described without considering the complexity of the whole development process. The article illustrates the entire AR pipeline development in architecture, from the conceptual phase to its application, highlighting each step’s specific aspects. This storytelling aims to provide a general overview to a non-expert, deepening the topic and stimulating a democratization process. The aware and extended use of AR in multiple areas of application can lead a new way forward for environmental understanding, bridging the gap between real and virtual space in an innovative perception of architecture.

Awareness of Community on the Conservation of Heritage Buildings in George Town, Penang

Having been gazetted as a World Heritage Site, George Town is known to have many heritage buildings that are more than a hundred years old. However, not all heritage buildings in George Town have appropriately been conserved by the local community, especially the owner and the tenant. This ignorance has caused severe issues of heritage buildings being neglected by the owner and the public. A stud has been carried out on the awareness of the local community in preserving historical buildings within George Town to gain insights into this issue. A quantitative method is used by distributing questionnaires to 387 respondents, which consists of the local community residing in George Town. The level of community awareness is measured to examine the extent of the local community being aware of the heritage buildings around them. Finding reveals that the community level of awareness to be moderate (mean=3.98), which reflects the ignorance of the local community in George Town towards preserving heritage buildings. Thus, the community in George Town is encouraged to be more vigilant in protecting the heritage buildings by joining activities related to heritage conservation held by the local authorities, NGOs, or even the local community. This activeness could ensure all the heritage buildings are protected from the effects of modernisation and be well-maintained for future use.
