“…Diagnostic structures, such as hummocky cross‐stratification and upward‐fining truncated laminae suggest deposition under combined‐flow erosion and traction transport followed by suspended load to suspension settling from waning currents, as documented elsewhere for storm‐dominated deposits (Nummedal & Swift, 1987; Arnott & Southard, 1990; Lazar et al ., 2015b; Grundvåg et al ., 2021; Schwarz et al ., 2021). The relative increase in Ni content suggests a sediment supply mainly from the Po River (Amorosi et al ., 2022).…”

“…Along‐strike facies development tends to be less predictable than facies relations reconstructed along‐dip, as has been well‐illustrated from deltaic (Bhattacharya & Walker, 1991; Bhattacharya, 2006; Olariu & Bhattacharya, 2006; Gani & Bhattacharya, 2007; Li et al ., 2015; Rossi et al ., 2017; Peng et al ., 2022), shoreface (Rodriguez et al ., 2004; Isla et al ., 2023), shallow‐marine (Eide et al ., 2018; Isla et al ., 2018; Schwarz et al ., 2018) and fluvial (Rittersbacher et al ., 2014) successions, as well as from other depositional settings (Poyatos‐Moré et al ., 2019; Schwarz et al ., 2021; Li & Schieber, 2022).…”

“…Ver ti cal biogenic struc tures are com monly con sid ered as ev i dence of rapid de po si tion due to storms (Savrda and Nanson, 2003;Bhattacharya et al, 2004;Mag yar et al, 2006;Buatois and Mángano, 2009;Liu et al, 2012;Üner, 2018;Schwarz et al, 2021). Fairly rare nar row and short es cape struc tures oc cur in the sandy and silty de pos its (sec tion 3), whereas rel a tively closely-spaced, thick and long struc tures occur in the coarse-grained de pos its (sec tion 2).…”

“…These examples clearly show that the general context of a basin is essential to understand the relationships between sediment accumulation and bioturbation. Schwarz et al (2021) provided an exciting case study for the importance of basin configuration and this enlightening investigation emphasized the role of ichnology in general environmental characterization and interpretation. When going in more detail, probably short-term environmental changes can be deciphered by analyzing the trace fossil suites and their size in such deposits.…”
