Architecture of a Web of Things eHealth framework for the support of users with chronic diseases

Abstract: This paper presents an architecture, system components, applications and interfaces of a Web of Things framework for supporting home hospitalization of users with chronic diseases. Home hospitalization intends to provide health care at same level and quality at the home of the patient same as it is provided at a hospital. After an introductory section, the document presents a global overview of the design philosophy, together with the main actors involved. Then the different layers of the system and their comp… Show more

“…Technical Aspects: The main task expected from the technical team is to design and introduce a generic reusable architecture. This holistic, cross-sectoral and interdisciplinary patient-centered care model of personalized care services is built on existing prototypes of IONIS, C3-Cloud and imergo®-ICP (10). The system is intended to provide patients, healthcare providers and caregivers with smart early warning CDS services and home and health monitoring capability.…”

“…As a result, research reported more knowledge is needed in E-health, for instance, knowledge about wearables [43] and the importance of wearable technologies in E-health applications that are used for punctual and accurate monitoring of patient conditions. More importantly, research reported the sensors that are used in the wearable technologies "will be easy-to-use for the patient and caregivers, flexible, configurable and able to measure several biomedical parameters relevant to monitor the progress of the patient" [51].…”

“…Furthermore, patients with a chronic disease, or whose vital signs need constantly to be measured and controlled, can be monitored comfortably from home, giving them a better quality of life [29]. Specifically in the field of ambient assisted living, technology offers new possibilities such as automatic medication reminders, fall alarms or even behavioral recognition, which offers elderly and disabled people, who in many cases are otherwise dependent on care personnel, more security, freedom and an increase in the quality of life [19].…”
