Archival research: a neglected method in organization studies

Abstract: Purpose Archival research is a much under-rated and under-utilized method of research in management studies. Yet multi-disciplinary undertakings being observed in recent times, such as in knowledge management (KM) systems, business history and social network studies, among others, indicate that there is a lot of potential to be explored. The purpose of this paper is to highlight this point and make a case for its inclusion in the researcher’s toolkit in the future. Design/methodology/approach The authors fol… Show more

“…Third, using document analysis as a research method has been relatively neglected in accounting and finance research (Loughran and Mc Donald, 2016). This study fills the gap by following the path of a few inter-disciplinary studies that have successfully used a similar research method to analyse organisational change issues (Broadbent et al, 2010;Das, 2018). Critics argue that document analysis does not provide enough or robust data for a case study (Ahrens and Chapman, 2006).…”

In our case, the decision to rely on a qualitative content analysis of archival records was based on the longitudinal nature of our inquiry and on the availability of digitalized and official HBS documents.…”

“…When researchers review company documents they have the advantage of a broader context for understanding the participants responses during interview (Dasgupta, 2015;Kornbluh, 2015). Other authors have noted that archival documents can be used to add robustness and a comprehensive overall impression of the data (Das, Jain, & Mishra, 2018). The further evidence of archival documents enhances triangulation of sources (Yin, 2014).…”

“…However, there are several disadvantages of using company documents in qualitative research. One disadvantage is reporting bias of the author or participant (Das et al, 2018). The chosen documents may reflect the opinion of the person who chose them, which is a potential source of bias (Miyazaki & Taylor, 2008).…”
