Arcobacter spp. in bovine milk: An emerging pathogen with potential zoonotic risk

Abstract: The aim of the present study was to assess the prevalence and genetic characteristics of Arcobacter spp. in bovine bulk tank milk produced in Apulia Region (Italy). Samples collected from 396 dairy farms, after enrichment in a selective broth, were subjected to an Arcobacter genus - specific Real Time PCR. Positive broths, previously filtered, were seeded on Karmali, MCCD and Columbia Blood Agar plates; presumptive Arcobacter spp. colonies were identified using an amplification and sequencing method and then c… Show more

“…The bacteria have been found in water, vegetables, meat (especially poultry), milk, dairy products, and shellfish (Ho et al, 2006 ; Hausdorf et al, 2013 ; Yesilmen et al, 2014 ; Ramees et al, 2017 ; Fanelli et al, 2019 ; Caruso et al, 2020 ; Chieffi et al, 2020 ). Since A. butzleri is frequently isolated from food-producing animals, these animals should be considered as an important reservoir (Rahimi, 2014 ; Giacometti et al, 2015 ; Rathlavath et al, 2017 ; Sekhar et al, 2017 ; Caruso et al, 2018 ; Chieffi et al, 2020 ). However, this would require successful colonization of the intestines and contamination during the slaughter process (Chieffi et al, 2020 ).…”

“…A. butzleri was first isolated in aborted bovine fetuses and was later linked to reproductive disorders and late-term abortions in cattle, pigs, and sheep. It can be present in a range of commonly consumed meat products [ 7 ] and bovine milk [ 67 ].…”
