Are declines in physical performance associated with a reduction in skill-related performance during professional soccer match-play?

Abstract: The aim of this study was to determine whether declines in physical performance in a professional soccer team during matchplay were associated with reductions in skill-related performance. Computerized tracking of performance in midfield players (n ¼ 11) showed that total distance and distance covered in high-speed running (414.4 km Á h 71 ) were greater in the first versus second half of games (both P 5 0.001) and in the first versus the final 15 min of play (P 5 0.05). Analysis of highspeed running across 5-… Show more

“…For example, no statistical difference in mean high-speed Fixture Congestion and Match Running Performance 607 [9]. Yet, the effect-size values for matches 1 and 2 versus match 3 were -0.72 and -1.45 suggesting moderate and large declines, respectively [23].…”

“…For example, no statistically significant changes in running performance were reported during both short (e.g., three matches in 5-7 days) [9,11] and longer periods of congestion (e.g., eight matches in 26 days) [10,15]. According to these apparently stable match running activity profiles, one could assume that elite players are simply able to maintain physical performance across congested schedules.…”
