Are Entrepreneurial Intentions Self-Regulated? Self-Consciousness, Core Self-Evaluations and Entrepreneurial Intentions of Higher Education Students

Abstract: The main aim of this study is to demonstrate that private self-consciousness (SC) and core self-evaluations (CSEs) influence their formation, via the perceived feasibility and desirability of entrepreneurship or in interaction with it. Two hundred and sixteen students, from a university, an engineering college and a management school, participated in a survey questionnaire which measured these variables as well as controlled factors (e.g. entrepreneurship education, presence of entrepreneurs in their close soc… Show more

“…Consequently, there has been a general shift in policy, emerging from this growth in the insight that entrepreneurship and small and medium enterprises (SMEs) are proxies for successful economic growth and development (Dimova & Pela 2018;Dzisi, Odoom & Gligah 2018). Governments and policymakers actively support entrepreneurial ventures' creation and growth through financial incentives, business incubators, relaxation of administrative barriers and educational programmes (Auzoult, Lheureux & Abdellaoui 2016). In Zimbabwe, although somehow ambivalent towards informal entrepreneurship, government policy has supported the growth of small businesses (Mujeyi & Sadomba 2019;Nyoni & Bonga 2018).…”

“…Principally in the field of organizational behavior, the effects of CSE on outcomes such as salary [ 3 ], goal setting [ 4 , 5 ], job searching behavior [ 6 ], job satisfaction [ 6 ], job or task performance [ 4 , 7 10 ], interpersonal relationships [ 11 ], career commitment [ 12 ], professional efficacy [ 13 ], and job burnout [ 12 16 ], have been verified in empirical studies. In the field of higher education, CSE has been verified to affect student behaviors, including test anxiety [ 17 ], academic performance [ 18 , 19 ], academic burnout [ 20 ], entrepreneurial intentions [ 21 ], continued career commitment [ 22 ], and life satisfaction [ 23 , 24 ].…”

“…Core self-evaluations. We administered the French translation (Auzoult et al, 2016;Baudin, 2009;Lheureux et al, 2015) of the Core Self-Evaluations Scale (CSES; Judge et al, 2003). The CSES comprises 12 items (α = .84): six positively worded (e.g.…”

“…The level of private self-consciousness has also been reported to moderate the path between subjective norm and behaviour insofar as the path between subjective norm and drinking behaviour was stronger in the case of high private self-consciousness (LaBrie et al, 2008). Auzoult et al (2016) failed to find this moderating effect, but did observe a direct effect of private self-consciousness on behavioural intentions. To our knowledge, this consistency hypothesis was investigated with attitude and subjective norm, it has not so far been investigated in relation to the path between self-efficacy and intention, so, one aim of the present study was to verify whether the moderating effect of private selfconsciousness also applies to self-efficacy.…”
