Are Footedness and Lateral Postures Better Predictors of Hemispheric Dominance Than Handedness: A Cross-sectional Questionnaire-Based Clinical and Pedigree Study

Abstract: Objective Approximately 9 out of 10 individuals show right-hand dominance. The remaining 10% include left-hand dominant and mixed handed/ambidextrous individuals. Laterality, lateral postures or lateral preference is defined by various authors as the most comfortable posture that an individual prefers to assume. The current study aims at finding the distribution of these lateral postures and their correlation with handedness/dominant side. Materials and Methods The study was done in medical and nursing student… Show more

“…In the current study, the number of right-handed patients was statistically higher than the number of left-handed patients. In most right-handed patients, the left hemisphere is the dominant hemisphere [ 27 - 28 ]. Therefore, in the current study, it was unsurprising that PD was more common in right-handed patients since the left hemisphere is more vulnerable to disturbance than the right hemisphere.…”

“…However, Parkinson’s disease starts at a much earlier age in left-handed patients, and the neurological disability is also severe. The dominant hemisphere is primarily the right hemisphere in left-handed people; however, the left hemisphere can be dominant in 15%-20% of cases [ 27 - 28 ]. The dominant hemisphere and immunological differences in left-handed people may be more complicated than what has been established currently.…”

“…The phenomenon of handedness is an interesting example of functional asymmetry [38][39][40]. Approximately 75-90% of the human population prefer to use their right hand to realize a lot of tasks involving various levels of dexterity, and about 80% are right footed [41,42]. Control of hands is contralateral, the right hand is under the control of the left hemisphere and the left hand is under the control of the right hemisphere.…”
