Are Low-Coordinating Anions of Interest as Doping Agents in Organic Conducting Polymers?

Abstract: Polypyrrole (PPy) is of great potential importance due to its excellent conductive properties; however, a major obstacle to commercialization (like many synthetic metals) is its poor stability, especially to oxidation. Here is reported a new synthesis of PPy in the presence of the cobaltabisdicarbollide anion (see Figure), whose uniform distribution throughout the polymer leads to a dramatic improvement in the overoxidation threshold.

“…This microsensor is fabricated on needle shaped silicon probes [31], and is based on the use of a novel conducting polymer polypyrrole doped with anion [3,3′-Co(1,2-C 2 B 9 H 11 ) 2 ] − (See Fig. 1) [31][32][33] acting as the mediating layer between platinum and a poly(vinylchloride) (PVC) membrane incorporating the hydrogen selective ionophore tri-n-dodecylamine (TDDA).…”

“…The cobaltabis(dicarbollide) anion has high chemical resistance [12,13,14] and, as we have described [15], the carborane-doped material has major advantages over common dopant anions. The high boron content in the deposited film, about 40% [15] of total atoms, results in a very high overoxidation resistance [15], preventing OH -attack on the polymeric chain. The use of such a high-volume anion with low charge density also prevents the dopant-anion exchange observed in alkaline media [6,16,17].…”
