Are modern health worries, environmental concerns, or paranormal beliefs associated with perceptions of the effectiveness of complementary and alternative medicine?

Abstract: Overall, older people, with more MHWs, and who believe in the paranormal are more likely to believe that CAM works, possibly because of a more intuitive, 'holistic', thinking style. Limitations of the study are considered.

“…In many cases, popular media and other sources exaggerate these dangers and risks (Bailer, Witthöft & Rist, 2008; Filipkowski, Smyth, Rutchick et al ., 2010; Petrie, Sivertsen, Hysing et al ., 2001) which leads to elevated levels of MHWs and to the feeling of heightened personal vulnerability (Petrie & Wessely, 2002). People with more MHWs use health care services more often (Filipkowski, Smyth, Rutchick et al ., 2010; Furnham, 2007), and they usually prefer methods of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) (Furnham, 2007; Jeswani & Furnham, 2010; Petrie, Sivertsen, Hysing et al ., 2001). MHWs were also significantly associated with subjective health complaints and symptom reports in many studies (Bailer, Witthöft & Rist, 2008; Köteles, Szemerszky, Freyler & Bárdos, 2011; Petrie, Sivertsen, Hysing et al ., 2001), even after controlling for negative affect (NA).…”
