Are Risk Factors for Coronary Artery Disease Different in Persons With and Without Obesity?

Abstract: Sex, age, diabetes mellitus, and smoking predicted CAD in all patients. Waist circumference only predicted CAD in persons without obesity, suggesting that normal-weight central obesity might be an important risk factor in this setting.

“…Many factors are related to coronary heart disease, including obesity, diabetes, and hypertension [ 20 , 21 ]. Previous studies have shown that EVF is correlated with traditional risk factors of coronary heart disease [ 22 24 ] and positively correlated with BMI [ 25 ]. However, some research results suggest that EVF can be an independent predictor of CAD [ 26 ] and is not associated with the traditional risk factors of CAD [ 27 , 28 ].…”

“…The data with normal distribution are described by mean ± standard deviation values and were tested with an independent-samples Student's t-test, while those with non-normal distribution are described by median (upper quartile, lower quartile) values and were tested with the Mann-Whitney U test that EVF is correlated with traditional risk factors of coronary heart disease [22][23][24] and positively correlated with BMI [25]. However, some research results suggest that EVF can be an independent predictor of CAD [26] and is not associated with the traditional risk factors of CAD [27,28].…”

“…The most common cause of death worldwide is cardiovascular disease [ 2 ], and obesity is the most critical factor in the development of coronary heart disease [ 3 ]. It is believed that the global spread of unhealthy lifestyle factors such as smoking, overweight, inactivity, and type 2 diabetes mellitus can partially explain this increasing change in the global epidemiological pattern [ 4 ]. As known, obesity is one of the most significant threats the world is facing, and it’s increasing progressively over the past decades [ 4 ].…”

As known, obesity is one of the most significant threats the world is facing, and it’s increasing progressively over the past decades [ 4 ]. The first wave of the obesity pandemic has already occurred in some high-income countries, and the second wave has hit some low- and middle-income countries [ 4 ].…”
