Are there critical periods for brain growth in children born preterm?

Abstract: Background: Children born very preterm who attend mainstream schools have a high prevalence of minor motor, behavioural, and learning disorders. These appear to be associated with reduced postnatal growth, particularly of the head. It is unclear when this poor growth occurs and whether growth restriction during different periods has different effects on later function. Objective: To identify periods during early development, in children born preterm, when impaired head growth may influence minor motor and cogn… Show more

“…Several studies have demonstrated that short stature and a small head size are important predictors for subnormal intellectual performance (4,34,35). Our study showed that a small birth size in combination with the K1245 A-allele, was associated with the smallest HC in SGA subjects, and especially in short SGA subjects (A-allele carriers: K1.70 SDS).…”

“…10,24,25 Prenatal, and even more often postnatal, growth rates have been shown to be important for cognitive abilities, 10,23 and infants with both intrauterine and postnatal growth restriction are especially likely to have less favorable outcomes. 19,23,26,27 Rapid early weight gain is associated with improved cognitive outcome in infancy.…”

“…Head size later in childhood has also been associated with cognition. 1,12,24 To gain a better understanding of the optimal postnatal growth and its relevance to the cognitive outcome of preterm infants, we need studies with comprehensive prospective follow-up of growth with several measurement points and standardized cognitive testing in a representative preterm population. Prenatal growth is an important factor to take into consideration, which can be achieved by separately analyzing SGA and non-SGA preterm infants.…”
