Ariensin, a New Lignan fromBursera ariensis

Abstract: From acetone extracts of the exudate of the tree Bursera ariensis, a new bilignan, named ariensin, has been isolated and characterized as (2R,3R)-bis-2.3-(3.4-methylenedioxybenzyl-)-1.4-butanediol diacetate. The structure has been determined from UV, IR, (1)H-NMR and (13)C-NMR data of the natural product, the dibromo derivative and the hydrolysis product. The optical rotation of the latter allowed the determination of the absolute configuration.

“…It belongs to the fagaroides group and is poorly studied. From the acetonic extract of the bark, Hernandez isolated a new lignan named ariensin ( 12 ) [ 105 ]. Ariensin was shown to be active against the RAW246.7 murine cell line (IC 50 9.8 μM) [ 11 ].…”

“…B. schlechtendalii showed important cytotoxic activity, and this finding is in accordance with McDonield and Cole [18] study, since they identified two lignans with anti tumor activity in this species. In the case of B. ariensis notable cytotoxic effects from the hexane extract against all the cancer cell lines were obtained, and although there are no previous reports that evaluate the cytotoxic activity of this species, a lignan, denominated 'ariensin', was isolated from B. ariensis growing in the state of Michoacán [27,28], and was then synthesized by Burke and Stevenson [29], as well as later identified in Acanthopanax koreanum [30].…”

“…An examination of an extract of the exudate of the bark of Bursera ariensis HBK (Burseraceae), reportedly used as a cicatrizing agent, was recently reported in this Journal (1). There was isolated a product, which was namend ariensin, and for which the structure (2R, 3R)-2,3-bis-(3 ,4-methylenedioxybenzyl)-1 ,4butanediol diacetate (1) was suggested on the basis of spectroscopic data (2).…”

“…Infusions and decoctions of thyme aerial parts are used in Spanish folk medicine in cases of whooping cough and as an antihelmintic (1), and are also used in Europe for treating coughs. In the last two years, the spasmolytic activity of some methoxylated flavones isolated from Thymus species has been estab- (6).…”
