“…On the other hand, in studies conducted in non-exposed populations (without evidence of exposure to iAs or another toxin), the A140D polymorphism has been associated with higher risk of diVerent diseases, such as childhood acute lymphatic leukemia (Pongstaporn et al 2009) and COPD (Yanbaeva et al 2009), suggesting that GSTO1-1 plays an important role in physiological processes that are not only related to the metabolism of toxins. As is known, human exposure to iAs in drinking water is associated with the development of diverse diseases including diVerent types of cancer, as well as non-cancerous diseases including atherosclerosis, high blood pressure, diabetes, and neurodegenerative diseases De Vizcaya-Ruiz et al 2009;Tseng 2008), all of them sharing a common sub-adjacent inXammatory component. Due the documented participation of GSTO1-1 in iAs metabolism, as well as in inXammation and apoptosis, the main aim of this work was to determine whether the presence of the polymorphisms (A140D, E155del and E208K) of GSTO1-1 in a human population chronically exposed to iAs in drinking water is associated with the expression of genes involved in the inXammatory response and in the apoptotic process, which could contribute to explain the interindividual variation in As-exposed human populations.…”
