Arsenic Methylation and Bladder Cancer Risk in Case???Control Studies in Argentina and the United States

Abstract: Overall, these results are consistent with data from Taiwan suggesting that some individuals who excrete a higher proportion of ingested arsenic as MMA are more susceptible to arsenic-related cancer.

“…It is worth mentioning, however, that MMA has the highest correlation coefficient among the metabolites. MMA excretion has been associated with an increased risk of arsenic-related diseases such as bladder and skin cancer (Hopenhayn-Rich et al, 1996;Chen et al, 2003;Steinmaus et al, 2006). This information supports the hypothesis that arsenic drinking water concentrations are, to some extent, good surrogates of arsenic exposure, even in populations exposed to relatively low levels of arsenic in drinking water (o50 mg/l).…”

“…Consequences of arsenic exposure to humans are evident when levels surpass 50 μg l -1 As (the current Argentine drinking water limit) (Bhattacharya et al 2006;Frisbie et al 2005). Health problems observed in the Argentine population are symptomatic of arsenic exposure (Steinmaus et al 2006;Tchounwou et al 2003). The most common manifestation is from skin disorders (lesions, keratosis, hyperpigmentation), but other more chronic conditions have been reported such as cancers (Steinmaus et al 2006;Bates et al 2004;Farías et al 2003;Hopenhayn-Rich et al 1998).…”
