Arsenic removal via ZVI in a hybrid spouted vessel/fixed bed filter system

Abstract: The description and operation of a novel, hybrid spouted vessel/fixed bed filter system for the removal of arsenic from water are presented. The system utilizes zero-valent iron (ZVI) particles circulating in a spouted vessel that continuously generates active colloidal iron corrosion products via the “self-polishing” action between ZVI source particles rolling in the moving bed that forms on the conical bottom of the spouted vessel. This action also serves as a “surface renewal” mechanism for the particles th… Show more

“…In indirect free hydroxyl radical oxidation ozone is decomposed to free reactive radicals, which can cause a significant rise in pollutant removal efficiency [2,3]. However, ozonation has some limitations such as: (1) high energy consumption for ozone generation which could be costly; (2) in some cases ozonation is selective; (3) incomplete oxidation and low efficiency due to low reaction kinetics and limited mass transfer; [4] and incomplete mineralization of recalcitrant organics [5].…”

“…Owing to its advantages of heat and mass transfer, gas-solid mixing, and fuel adaptability, the spout fluidized bed has been widely applied in chemical, energy, and environmental industries (Borini, Andrade, & Freitas, 2009;Calo, Madhavan, Kirchner, & Bain, 2012;El-Naas, Al-Zuhair, & Makhlouf, 2010;Olazar, Arandes, Zabala, Aguayo, & Bilbao, 1997). Materials in spout fluidized bed reactors often consist of multi-component particle mixtures with different densities and/or sizes.…”
