Abstract-Multicasting is useful for various applications such as multimedia broadcasting. In current 802.11, multicast frames are sent as broadcast frames at a low transmission rate without any acknowledgement or binary exponential backoff. This naive multicasting mechanism degrades the performance of not only multicast flows but also unicast flows. In this paper, we propose a new multicasting mechanism based on the leaderbased approach to improve the legacy multicast transmissions, maintaining coexistence with legacy 802.11 devices. Simulations show that our protocol achieves well-balanced performance in terms of reliability, latency, goodput, and transmission fairness in comprehensive environments.

Wireless multicast service can be used for video streaming service to save the network resources by sending the same popular multimedia contents to a group of users at once. For better multimedia streaming multicast service, we propose a quality-aware rate adaptation (QARA) scheme for scalable video multicast in rate adaptive wireless networks. In QARA, transmission rate is determined depending on the content's type and users' channel conditions. First, the base layer is transmitted by a low rate for high reliability. That means we provide basic service quality to all users. On the contrary, the transmission rate for enhancement layer is adapted by using channel condition feedback from a randomly selected node. So, the enhancement layer frames in a multimedia content is sent with various transmission rates. Therefore, each node can be provided with differentiated quality services. Consequently, QARA is capable of serving heterogeneous population of mobile nodes. Moreover, it can utilize network resources more efficiently. Our simulation results show that QARA outperforms utilization of the available transmission rate and reduces the data transmission time.

Multimedia communications over WLAN is widely acknowledged as one of the key, emerging applications for wireless LANs. As with any multiservice network, there is the need to provision the WLANs with the QoS mechanisms capable of guaranteeing the requirements of various services. The IEEE 802.11e (EDCA) standard defines the required QoS mechanisms into the protocol architecture of IEEE 802.11 WLANs. However, recent studies have shown that EDCA performs poorly when the medium is highly loaded due to the high collision rate. Numerous proposals have been reported in the literature aiming to overcome this main drawback. However, EDCA and the proposed mechanisms continue to have a serious problem with a specific type of application: the multicast traffic. In EDCA (as in DCF) the multicast service is defined as an unreliable service, i.e., it does not include the use of ACK frames. Furthermore, different to the unicast service, the multicast service makes use of a single rate out of the various rates included in the Basic Service Set (BSS) defined by the IEEE 802.11 standard. This situation has led many researchers to design techniques aiming to improve the multicast transmission such as Auto Rate Selection mechanism for Multicast (ARMS) and Hierarchical-ARSM (H-ARSM). In this paper we present a comparative performance evaluation when supporting different services, such as, voice, video, best-effort, background and in presence of multicast traffic. Our simulation results show the benefits present in multimedia applications when the unicast and multicast traffic are sent efficiently.
