Space, any three dimensional area with defined boundaries, can be interpreted as a figment of human consciousness, an extension of the human body. Although functions such as embracement, protection, and isolation first come to mind; space, including artistic expression, has also aggregated intellectual, spiritual, and social activities. Throughout history, continuous interactions, alterations, and transformations are observed in art. During this process many modes of artistic expression emerged, got widespread and eventually became a target for individuals looking for alternative ways of expression. Contemporary art came into being as a criticism for its preceding ways of artistic expressions of the recent history. The modes of artistic expression attributed to contemporary art such as; installation art, video art, performance art and land art bear importance for transforming space into a functioning element of the artistic construction. This study focuses on the transformation of the humanspace-art relationship, examining the interrelation between space and art through significant contemporary artworks and speculates on the evolution of space-art relationship in the future.
