Artemis, the New 14C AMS at LMC14 in Saclay, France

Abstract: The new facility Artemis was installed in 2003 in Saclay, France. This 3MV NEC Pelletron is dedicated to high-precision radiocarbon measurements for French 14C laboratories. We will present information on Artemis along with our sample preparation methods. Results from measurements on some intercalibration samples will be given along with the values of measured blanks. Finally, we report on some problems we have encountered when measuring sputter cathodes with high CH− outputs.

“…Samples were converted to CO 2 in a semi-automated carbonate vacuum line (Tisnérat-Laborde et al, 2001), reduced to graphite using hydrogen in the presence of iron powder (Arnold et al 1989), and measured by the AMS-LMC14 (Laboratoire de Mesure du Carbon 14) Artemis accelerator facility (Cottereau et al, 2007). They are expressed as pMC normalised to a δ 13 C of −25 ‰ relative to the Vienna Pee Dee Belemnite (PDB) international standard according to Stuiver and Polach (1977).…”

“…Subsequent steps are similar in both laboratories: CO 2 evolving, water elimination, and evaluation of C quantity. CO 2 reduction and 14 C activity measurements are performed in Saclay (67,68) and Poznan (69,70) according to their respective protocols and equipment.…”

“…Finally, the CO 2 was reduced into graphite using hydrogen in the presence of iron powder according to the procedure developed by Arnold et al (1989). The graphite targets were analyzed at the AMS-Artemis facility (Cottereau et al 2007). 14 C results are reported as  14 C, the deviation of a sample's 14 C/ 12 C ratio from that of a pre-industrial wood standard, expressed in per mil (‰) according to the convention of Stuiver and Polach (1977), normalized to a  13 C of -25.0‰ relative to the Pee Dee Belemnite (PDB) international standard, and corrected by the age of the sample and background subtraction.…”
