Artemisia iwayomogi (Dowijigi) inhibits lipopolysaccharide‑induced inflammation in RAW264.7 macrophages by suppressing the NF‑κB signaling pathway

Abstract: Inflammatory diseases are an important health concern and have a growing incidence worldwide. Thus, developing novel and safe drugs to treat these disorders remains an important pursuit. Artemisia iwayomogi, locally known as Dowijigi (DJ), is a perennial herb found primarily in Korea and is used to treat various diseases such as hepatitis, inflammation and immune disorders. In the present study, the anti-inflammatory effects of a polyphenolic extract from the DJ flower (PDJ) in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimula… Show more

“…In the present study, our data showed that PM2.5 exposure increased the expression of inflammatory cytokines, including IL‐1β, IL‐6, and TNF‐α in lung tissues compared with the control and saline group. Moreover, previous studies found that the expression level of IL‐1β was regulated by multiple pathways in inflammation diseases, such as toll‐like receptor 4 (TLR4)/nuclear factor kappa beta (NF‐κB) pathway, 26,27 NLRP3 inflammasome, 28 Akt pathway 13 . For instance, Wang et al showed that PM2.5 exposure enhanced the levels of IL‐1β by activating the TLR4/MyD88 pathway and NLRP3 inflammasome in murine airway inflammation 29 .…”

“…The NF‐κB signaling pathway is activated by the phosphorylation, ubiquitination, and subsequent proteolytic degradation of NF‐κB‐bound IκB kinase proteins such as IκBα and p65. These proteins in turn trigger the response of cytokine genes such as TNF‐α, IL‐6, and IL‐1β in the nucleus (Kim et al., 2020 ). Moreover, Bi et al.…”

“…LPS is one of the most effective macrophage activators [3]. LPS activates inflammatory mediators such as nitric oxide (NO) and prostaglandin E 2 (PGE 2 ) and induces overproduction.…”
