Arterial Spin Labeling Magnetic Resonance Imaging in the Assessment of Non-Convulsive Status Epilepticus in Alzheimer’s Disease: A Report of Two Cases

Abstract: Challenging differential diagnosis Background: The diagnosis of early non-convulsant status epilepticus (NCSE) can be challenging and can overlap with other critical conditions. Two patients with Alzheimer's disease are reported with clinically suspected NCSE presenting in the emergency setting who were diagnosed using arterial spin-labeling magnetic resonance imaging (ASL-MRI) sequences. Case Reports: In Case 1, a 69-year-old woman with mild Alzheimer's disease and diabetes presented with acute worsening of c… Show more

“…129 Arterial spin labeling was successfully applied to reveal hyperperfusion in several patients with nonconvulsive status epilepticus. 130 In 60 patients with status epilepticus, DWI and T2-weighted abnormalities were highly associated with a poor outcome. 131 In another study including 69 patients, the EEG of patients with status epilepticus with peri-ictal DWI restrictions was predominated by circumscribed "periodic lateralized discharges (PLEDs)" and by repetitive seizures.…”
