Arthrobacter phenanthrenivorans sp. nov., to accommodate the phenanthrene-degrading bacterium Arthrobacter sp. strain Sphe3

Abstract: A novel phenanthrene-degrading bacterium, designated strain Sphe3 T , was isolated from a creosote-contaminated soil in Greece. Cells were non-motile, Gram-positive, aerobic, and rod-to coccus-shaped. The strain was isolated on the basis of formation of a clear zone on agar plates sprayed with phenanthrene. Optimal growth occurred at 30 6C. The G+C content of the DNA was 65.7 mol%. The polar lipid pattern of strain Sphe3 T consisted of phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol and diphosphatidylglycerol. … Show more

“…They are composed of a combination of monosaturated and completely unsaturated menaquinones that also differ in the length of the isoprenoic side chains. A. scleromae was reported to contain MK-8(H 2 ) and MK-10 (Huang et al, 2005), whereas A. phenanthrenivorans contains MK-8 and MK-9(H 2 ) (Kallimanis et al, 2009). Combinations of completely unsaturated and monosaturated quinones are well known among the class Actinobacteria, but they usually share the same length of isoprenoic side chain.…”

“…A. phenanthrenivorans strain Sphe3 was isolated from a creosote-polluted area in Epirus, Greece (12 km north of the city of Ioannina), as described previously (20). M9 minimal medium (MM M9) was supplemented with 0.02% (wt/vol) phenanthrene or 0.04% (wt/vol) glucose as described previously (22).…”
