Artificial Intelligence Applied to a Robotic Dairy Farm to Model Milk Productivity and Quality based on Cow Data and Daily Environmental Parameters

Abstract: Increased global temperatures and climatic anomalies, such as heatwaves, as a product of climate change, are impacting the heat stress levels of farm animals. These impacts could have detrimental effects on the milk quality and productivity of dairy cows. This research used four years of data from a robotic dairy farm from 36 cows with similar heat tolerance (Model 1), and all 312 cows from the farm (Model 2). These data consisted of programmed concentrate feed and weight combined with weather parameters to de… Show more

“…Previously, an AI system to reduce heat stress and increase milk production and quality has been proposed for dairy farms based on the analysis of THI data and cow management information through ML [24]. From the latter study, automatic drafting doors are controlled from ML outputs that transport the cows to the milking area or to a sprinkler-based system to reduce heat stress.…”

“…Specifically, research taping into records using machine learning has been recently applied to a robotic dairy farm, analyzing and modeling four years of data using machine learning to assess milk quality traits and productivity [8]. Machine learning modeling was implemented in a vineyard from vertical vintages and meteorological data to obtain aroma profiles according to changes in seasonality [9].…”

“…Such an IoT system is very promising not only because it could detect heat strain more accurately and earlier based on animal’s feeling, but also because it could save energy. In addition, the heat strain screening system in the passage to the parlor could achieve an automatic separation of heat-stressed cows [ 148 ].…”
