Artificial intelligence based system to improve the inspection of plastic mould surfaces

Abstract: Plastic industry is today in a constant growth, demanding several products from other segments, which includes the plastic moulds, used mainly in the injection moulding process. This paper presents a methodology for the surface evaluation of plastic moulds, aiming the automation of the polishing surface analysis. Provided that this type of analysis by traditional procedures can be slow and expensive, the development of automatic system could lead to considerable improvements regarding the speed and reliability… Show more

“…Academic literature indicates usage of AI as quality deployment function will be beneficial for large scale production. Especially when humans get exhausted, then AI powered system will play a great role in maintaining product quality standards, which is in line with literature which indicates AI usage for inspection reduces cost and time spent on the inspection (Librantz et al, 2017). On social media experts were discussing on service robots and AI powered drone usage for inspecting steel structures and wind turbine respectively.…”

“…Another aspect studied in the processes of microinjection of plastics has been the gate location in an injection mold. Applying finite element analysis focused on simulation and using artificial intelligence techniques such as neural networks and genetic algorithms, optimal location values have been obtained, thus minimizing the welding indexes in the mold joining lines, reducing failures in the final product and optimizing the manufacturing process [78].…”
