“…Kronacher and Lodemann (1930) quote a case in which resection of the sympathetic trunk on one side in the neck of a monkey led to an increased growth of the head hairs on the same side. Haddow and Rudall (1945) demonstrated that the waves of active hair growth in the rat are associated with corresponding waves of vasodilatation.…”

“…There is no evidence in the literature that the wave-like pattern of follicle initiation and development characteristic of prenatal stages is repeated during postnatal fleece development. However, this cannot be ruled out as a possibility, and we are reminded that postnatal growth of hair on the guinea-pig (Strangeways, 1933) and on the rat (Haddow & Rudall, 1945;Hellinga, 1946) occurs as a series of waves of growth. It is conceivable that after a pause at or about birth, fibre growth recommences not simultaneously on all regions but more in the manner in which prenatal follicle and fibre growth takes place.…”

“…Clearly the extent of alteration in skin size and alterations in rate of wool production are parallel events but not necessarily dependent. Both would be governed by the level of nutrients available in the blood stream for growth of skin and growth of fibres, and it is also likely that extent of blood supply in the skin has a considerable influence (Haddow & Rudall, 1945;Ferguson et al 1949).…”

“…That the growth of hair and other epidermal appendages of mammals is accelerated by warming and hyperemia and is depressed by cold and ischemia has been reported in many other contexts (e.g., Haddow et al 1945;Hale 1945;Storey and Leblond 1951;Montagna 1956;Heroux 1960;Sapin-Jaloustre andSapin-Jaloustre 1956 in Heroux 1960). Although one might expect the epidermis of walruses to be enzymatically adapted for metabolism and growth at low temperatures, my observations of hair growth about healing wounds and more rapid and complete molts at Round Island than farther north, were contraindicative of such adaptation.…”
