“…Further, research on the ecological eVects of submerged structures has mainly been carried out in tropical or temperate waters (reviewed in Jensen et al 2000;Baine 2001). Coldtemperate environments, as found in northern Europe, have received less attention (but see Malm 2005;Qvarfordt et al 2006;Wilhelmsson et al 2006a, b;Zettler and Pollehne 2006;Andersson et al 2007) even though man-made structures are commonly found in those waters.…”

“…In the succession that may follow the interactions between resident species and new colonizers could further inXuence patterns of colonization (Connell and Slatyer 1977). Two of the most commonly used materials in underwater constructions, steel and concrete (Baine 2001), have rarely been compared in terms of the ecological eVects of their presence in marine waters (but see Anderson and Underwood 1994;Brown 2005). For a settling organism, these two types of substrates oVer diVerent micro-scale environments with diVerent surface heterogeneity and material composition and as a consequence, diVerent communities would be expected to develop (Foster 1975;Wahl 1989;Guilbeau et al 2003;Svane and Petersen 2001).…”

“…Fisheries biologists need to recognise that increases in catches due to services provided by reefs will depend on species-specific biological life cycles, fish adaptation to the reef environment and to fishing/exploitation strategies rather than on evaluating fishes associated with artificial reefs using novel approaches (BRICKHILL et al, 2005;BAINE, 2001;WHITMARSH et al, 2008;BORTONE et al, 2011). The lack of a suitable area with a full complement of habitats and structural complexity in the sandy fishing grounds off southern Portugal was the justification for the establishment of ARs, that might provide at least some of the necessary habitat requirements for future implementation of marine protected areas in the region (LEITÃO et al, 2009) due to their accepted role in the ecology of marine life and habitat fish quality (SANTOS et al, 2011a,b).…”
