Purpose: This paper discussed about the development of Neoteric Approach Curriculum concept and the mapping of the Science Standard Document. The objectives of study are to examine the benefits of integrated curriculum, to outline the mapping of the concept of Neoteric Approach Curriculum for Year Four and to discuss the significant of integrating Science, Health Education and Visual Art. Methodology: The development of the Neoteric Approach Curriculum for Year 4 Science Standard Document was generated from the idea of subject-integration. The mapping of the integration of Science, Health Education and Visual Art are needed to originate an integrated discipline that named as Learning Cluster of Human Development for Year Four. This learning cluster is grouped based on the intention to improve human personal development in terms of skills development and academic knowledge. Findings: The Neoteric Approach is a new and modern approach for delivering the teaching and learning process that helps to strengthen the existing Malaysian National Curriculum. Neoteric Approach Curriculum acts as a solution to the modernization of education and pedagogy to produce a holistic student in terms of balanced physically, emotionally, spiritually and intellectually, as well as to be competitive to fulfil the needs of 21st century. The theories that supported the concept of Neoteric Approach curriculum are constructivism theory by Jean Piaget and progressivism theory by John Dewey. Based on the theories, the elements that emphasized are active learning and learning by doing which allows the students to learn by actively engage in the learning process and enhanced their learning experience. Unique contribution to theory, practice and policy: By having this approach, it could help to enhance the students-centred learning with integrated strategy and support active learning in classroom, cultivating students’ knowledge and skills development which will benefit them in the future.

Promoting historical empathy with a local history research project about the pandemic

PurposeWe examined how high school students demonstrated historical empathy through conducting local history place-based research to create an exhibit and companion book about the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on their community. The majority of existing historical empathy scholarship focuses on classroom-based inquiry of historical events, people and time periods. We contend that broader examination of how historical empathy can be promoted beyond school-based instruction can contribute to the field by examining how student analyses of historical contexts and perspectives, and making affective connections to historical topics of study are needed when engaging in placed-based local history projects.Design/methodology/approachQualitative case study methodology was implemented for this study. A Likert-scale survey with a questionnaire was distributed to 30 high school study participants. Thirteen students gave follow-up interviews. Students’ responses on the surveys, interviews and questionnaires were organized into three categories that aligned to the theoretical framework – identification of historical contexts of the sources that students collected, analysis of how contexts shaped the perspectives expressed in the collected sources and expression of reasoned connections between the students’ emotions and experiences during the pandemic. A rubric was used to examine how students’ writing samples and reflections reflected demonstration of historical empathy.FindingsStudents responded that their local history research about the pandemic contributed to their displays of historical empathy. Students displayed weaker evidence of historical empathy while examining archival resources to explain the historical contexts of the pandemic. Student demonstration of historical empathy was stronger when analyzing community-sourced documents for perspectives and making reasoned affective connections to what they learned about the historical significance of the pandemic. The place-based aspects of this project were strongly connected to the students’ engagement in historical empathy because the sources they analyzed were relevant to their experiences and identities as citizens in their community.Originality/valueDocumenting the diverse human experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic is crucial to preserving the history of this extraordinary time. Every person around the globe experienced the pandemic differently, hence riding out the same storm in different boats. At some point, the pandemic will appear in historical narratives of the social studies curriculum. Therefore, now is an opportune time to ascertain whether place-based local history research about the contexts, perspectives and experiences of community members and children themselves, during the pandemic can foster historical empathy.

The lack of digital learning media makes it difficult for students to study anywhere. This research aims to analyze Android-based media applications for the history of the Balinese Kingdom that are suitable for learning media for class X high school Hindu and Buddhist Kingdoms material. This research method is research and development (R&D) with a 4-D approach. The subject of this research is class X SMA. The validation process involves experts in the field of materials and media. Data collection methods through interviews, surveys, questionnaires and literature studies. The data analysis technique uses quantitative descriptive analysis. The research results show that the Android-based media application for the history of the Balinese kingdom based on Hindu and Buddhist kingdom material is very suitable for use as an alternative learning media to increase historical empathy. By using augmented reality (AR) technology, students can explore historical sites in realistic 3D, allowing them to experience the atmosphere of the past more realistically. Learning media using Android-based applications can provide a more exciting and relevant approach for students, increase historical empathy, and expand the accessibility of learning materials. This research implies that the use of technology such as augmented reality (AR) and multimedia interaction makes historical material more exciting and easier to understand and allows students to engage emotionally and deeply with the material being studied.
