Arzneimittelformen und Arzneimittelverabreichung in der Geriatrie

Abstract: The demographic shift demands more and more customized medical supplies and management structures for geriatric patients. The elderly patient with age-related functional restrictions and multi-morbidity is at special risk for an ill-adapted pharmacotherapy. In addition the frail elderly person is dependent on general-practitioner assistance. The prescription of a suitable drug and a safe and workable (galenic) application form is key to therapeutic success. Age-based intake regulations, repeated education, and… Show more

“…if it should be taken more than once a day (11). When choosing between drugs with almost equal efficacy and safety, physicians can consider the patient's preferences to obtain adherence to the medication (11,12). This study sought to investigate the elderly people or their caregivers' attitudes and preferences toward ease of use and compliance with different dosage forms and improve medication in the elderly population.…”

“…The majority of available drug therapies on the market are SODF (65-70%), such as tablets and capsules with different sizes and shapes. SODF remain very popular for manufacturing companies, due to different reasons (e.g., cheap manufacturing, accurate dosing, patient acceptability, and taste masking) [52][53][54]. However, when considering older patients and their incidence for polypharmacy, the administration of SODF can become a daunting task [55,56].…”

“…Additionally, 29% of the 56 patients are not even taking prescribed medicines that are 57 reported in the physicians report as prescribed and in 20% of 58 the cases the dose strength is arbitrarily modified by the patient 59 (Swanlund, 2010;Delafuente, 2003) Once the appropriate med-60 ications have been prescribed, compliance and adherence to the 61 prescription remains the most critical aspect in reaching the 62 expected therapeutic outcomes (Vik et al, 2006). 63 Several studies reported issues in the ability of especially older 64 adults to manage the packaging of the medicinal products 65 (Swanlund, 2010;Atkin et al, 1994), administering the products 66 (Heppner et al, 2006;Manias et al, 2004) and altering the 67 products to be suitable for administration (Rodenhuis et al, 2003 Table 2. 139 As the words "adherence" and "compliance" were used in 140 nearly all publications related to preparation or formulations 141 aspects (inclusion criteria 7) as well as in relation to key words 142 from the medicinal product key word list (inclusion criteria 5) at 143 least once, these key words were not considered as a Table 1 Search criteria and key words applied to identify publications in the literature research.…”
